The Space:
Kalorama Cottage is a small cottage on the mountain in Kalorama, in the Dandenong Ranges. It sleeps four. There is a wood fire in a red-brick hearth, a spa bath, and a backyard with a fire pit under the trees. SkyHigh Mount Dandenong and the Kalorama Lookout are both close enough to walk to.
The Space
The living room sits under a pitched white ceiling with a skylight in the middle, so daylight falls straight onto the sofa. The wood fire is set into a brick wall with a timber mantel. Two wingback armchairs face glass doors that open onto a small balcony with a white timber balustrade and a view into the trees. There is a Smart TV with streaming apps, and a collection of books and board games for the nights you would rather leave the screen off.
Through the arch is the kitchen, in soft blue-grey with timber benchtops. It has a gas stove, an oven, a microwave, a toaster, a kettle and a Nespresso machine with a milk heater. The pantry has the basics and a little milk to start the first morning. A round white table for four sits in a nook of windows looking onto the garden.
Gas ducted heating keeps the whole cottage warm in winter, and a split-system air conditioner and a ceiling fan handle the summer. The living areas have polished timber floors.
Sleeping Arrangements
Two bedrooms for four guests, both with new mattresses. Upstairs, the queen bedroom sits under the high pitched roof. Downstairs, the double bedroom looks into the garden and can be made up with a children's doona. Bed linen, extra pillows and blankets are supplied.
The bathroom is small but has a jetted spa bath with a shower over it, plus a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
Work and Connectivity
Wi-Fi and a dedicated workspace for anyone who needs to log in. A washing machine, a dryer and an iron make a longer stay easy, and long-term stays are welcome.
The Balcony and Garden
The front balcony is a quiet spot for the first coffee of the day. Out the back, a private lawn runs down between tall trees to a rust-steel fire pit, with a round outdoor table and four chairs for a slow lunch. Pets are welcome. The garden is not fenced, so dogs need company outside. Free parking is on site, and check-in is self check-in with a smart lock.
The Neighbourhood
Kalorama sits on the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, near the top of the Dandenong Ranges. The Kalorama Lookout, also called the Silvan Reservoir Lookout, is a 12 minute walk away and looks out over the Yarra Valley. Kalorama Park and the Karwarra Australian Plant Garden are close by.
Walk about 14 minutes up the hill to SkyHigh Mount Dandenong, where the lookout faces all of Melbourne, or to the William Ricketts Sanctuary, where clay sculptures sit among the tree ferns. The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, famous for its rhododendrons in spring, is about four minutes by car.
Olinda is a short drive. Pie in the Sky is known for its pies, the Olinda Tea House is good for a pot of tea, and Ranges at Olinda does a long lunch. Cloudehill Gardens and the Olinda Falls walk are close by. In Sassafras, Miss Marple's Tearoom is the place for scones.
Sherbrooke Forest is about 20 minutes south. Sherbrooke Falls, Grants Picnic Ground and the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens are all worth an afternoon. Puffing Billy Railway steams out of Belgrave, and the 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk starts at Ferntree Gully.
Head down the north side of the mountain into the Yarra Valley. Whispering Hills Vineyard and Helen's Hill Estate at Seville are both about 20 minutes away. Further on are Healesville Sanctuary, Chandon at Coldstream and Rochford Wines.
For supplies, Chirnside Park Shopping Centre and Croydon Central are both about 20 minutes by car. Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully and Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood East both have emergency departments. Lilydale, Mooroolbark and Croydon stations have trains to the city.
